Year of Mercy

Dear Parishioners,

In his Bull of Indiction, announcing the upcoming Jubilee of Mercy, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, said this:

“The Church’s first truth is the love of Christ. The Church makes herself a servant of this love and mediates it to all people: a love that forgives and expresses itself in the gift of oneself. Consequently, wherever the Church is present, the mercy of the Father must be evident. In our parishes, communities, associations and movements, in a word, wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy.”

We as a parish want to respond to this invitation of the Holy Father, to make our local church, more and more, an “oasis of mercy.”  To that end, after lengthy discussions with the other members of our parish clergy, the parish staff, and our Pastoral Council, I have decided to undertake a variety of activities that will help us all celebrate the Lord’s mercy during the upcoming liturgical year.  Through prayer, acts of service, opportunities for Reconciliation, and various other encounters with the Church’s ministries of mercy, I hope we all have a rich experience of the Lord’s love.

Below this letter, please find our initial calendar for the Year of Mercy events at St. John the Baptist.  These are all wonderful ways to begin planning for the upcoming year, but I am sure there will be even more opportunities, in addition to these, which will present themselves for us during the months ahead.  Above all, let us all do whatever we can, to welcome people, especially those who have been away from the practice of their faith, or those to whom the Catholic Church may be a stranger, to encounter the mercy of God in our midst, making the entire parish an “oasis of mercy.”

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Bob Roggenbuck
